We live in the present. The present describes what is happening NOW.
Dinosaurs lived in the past. The past describes something that has already happened.
Below are some photographs from the USGS, see if you can tell what is from the past and what is from the present.

On our field trip we will see a lot of cool stuff!
What can we do to show we respect the center's property?
Why is it important to respect the property?

This is a Tyrannosaurus Rex footprint. It was made about 65 to 70 million years ago. The footprint was discovered in 1983, about 30 years ago.

- Is this dinosaur footprint from the past or the present?
- Was it discovered in the past or present?
- Are you looking at it in the past or present?

This display at the USGS shows how libraries have changed over time.
Libraries in the PAST:
Libraries in the PAST:
- 1400's - 1700's: Books and maps were very expensive and few people had access to them
- 1800's: Explorers and settlers started to document the land
- 1800's - 1900's: Books and maps are mass-produced and many people have access to libraries
- The left side of the above photograph shows black and white photographs and old books.
- Libraries are abundant in our communities, schools, and even our classrooms.
- Today satellites and other types of technology document the land
- Many people can access books through their computers or even their phones!
- The right side of the picture shows colorful maps and illustrations, and even a computer.
- How are libraries in the present different from libraries in the past?
- How are libraries in the present the same from libraries in the past?

This display at the USGS shows the difference between a trip to Antarctica in 1975 (on the left) and a trip to Antarctica in 2000 (on the right). Although you may not be able to tell from the display, the equipment the scientists used in 2000 is different than in 1975, why do you think that is? What do you notice about the clothes from the past and present?
Why do you think things change over time?
